Change of Date

The DOL quiz for this week will be Friday, which is a change from what I told the children today.  Here are the sentences from this week: 

1.“Me bought this book of fables with my allowence,” said luna.

2.Then she said, “its called Jataka Tales I just love it”!

3.Tom said, “Luna have you noticed the resemblence between greek and indian fables”?

4.“Fables,” said Tom, are usually very short and they often teaches a lesson.”

5.Mr Serra said, “listen to my radio performince next thursday at 230.”

6.He reading an story called “The Oldest of the animals” then.

7.Friends and Neighbors a fable about the importence of friendship and caring for others.

8.“Harsh words,” another fable teaches a lesson about kindness.

9.Under the boxes lies Lunas missing book of fables, Jataka tales.

10.Tom said, “The second fable the goodes one of all”!

Homework

The noun homework packet is due on Wednesday, August 31 NOT on Tuesday, August 30.

The next reading assignment is due Friday, September 2.  (Cay Chapters 7-14; Island Chapters 10-20)

Pinnacle

Parents,

 

Pinnacle is now online and ready for viewing.  If you were at open house, you will remember that I asked you to keep in mind that Pinnacle is just a tool - a good tool, but just a tool.  Below are some helpful hints for using Pinnacle.

           

• When you were in school, you were allowed to make one bad grade without your parents knowing; students now have all their grades posted on-line.  It is OK to make one bad grade occasionally.  What is not OK is to make bad grades consistently. 
• When there is a “0” or a “Z” entered for a grade, it usually means that the student didn’t turn in the work.  Please have them look in their bookbag, in their binder, in their room, and in their locker.  The “no name” bin in my room is also another good place to look.  I can’t enter a grade, if I don’t know who completed it.
• When a student has a grade of 50%, it could mean that they turned in the work late.  I try to write “late” on top of the assignment if this is the case.
• If you have a question about a certain grade, the quickest way to check on it is to print out the grade sheet, mark the questionable grade and send it in by the student.  It’s much quicker to check on the grade when the student is standing there.  We normally need to go through the binder, the locker, the “no name” bin, etc.  I normally need to have a conversation with the student before I can get to the bottom of the situation.
• Remember, when I enter an assignment title, it enters in all four of my classes.  I will very often get one or two classes updated and have to enter grades for the other classes at a later date.  If the assignment has no grade next to it, this is probably the case.  Remember, if the student didn’t turn in the assignment, I usually enter a “Z” or a “0”
• The difference between a “Z” and “0” is that a “Z” can be made up and a “0” can’t.  The “Z” will turn into a “0” if not made up before the deadline.
• I try very hard to double check grades before report cards; I would hate to think that I had made a mistake that would lower a student’s grade.  However, please feel free to question grades.  Students have a “graded work” section in their binder and all returned work should be there.
•  I do like students to be involved with their own grades, please consider giving your child their Pinnacle password.  Students need to start taking responsibility for not only checking their grades, but for coming to me if there are questions. 

Noun Homework/Lit Homework

The students have a noun homework packet that is due Tuesday, August 30.  The Noun Test should be Thursday, September 1.

Students reading The Cay,  periods 1-3, should have chapters 1-6 completed by the time they come to class Friday. 

Students reading Island ,period 4, should have chapters 1-9 completed by the time they come to class Friday.

DOL Quiz

I'm sorry that the DOL sentences were not posted Wednesday night.  Because of this error, I will postpone the DOL Quiz until Friday.  Attached are the sentences that we worked with this week.

9.“Your red marrow definitly have a important job, said the doctor.

10.“The red marrow make red blood cells constantly,” she explained to I.

Literature Circles and Homework

Each student was given a book today in class.  Periods one, two and three received The Cay and period four received Island of the Blue Dolphins.  Students should begin reading the book; additional directions will be given Wednesday.

If your child didn't turn in their "Hello, It's Me" poem today in class, they should turn it in at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Open House

Open house for 6th grade parents will be this Tuesday.  Parents should be in the theater at 6:30.

Booktalks

The students were given the information needed to complete their summer reading project.  The "book-talk" project is due Tuesday, August 23.
