On Wednesday, students were assigned a rock cycle story. We wrote an outline in class about the rock cycle. Students were to take the outline and turn it into a rough draft with a minimum of 5 paragraphs and a maximum of 7 paragraphs. Today in class, we discussed and worked more on our rough draft. On Friday, students are to bring their completed rough draft to Language Arts. They will review their rough draft in LA. The final copy is due on October 4 to their LA teacher. This collaborative assignment is allowing students to apply what they learn in LA about writing into the science classroom. They will receive a grade in LA and Science for this project. Below is a required word list; these words must be included in the story.
Required words for rock cycle story: Rock cycle, igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, erosion, weathering, heat, pressure, melting, cooling, solidification, uplift, lava, volcanic activity OR volcano, magma, sediment, compaction, cementation, intrusive OR extrusive.
Outline for rock cycle story:
1.Igneous rock
a. Intrusive – granite is the most common intrusive igneous rock.
b. Extrusive igneous rock – obsidian.
2.Granite rock that is formed inside the earth. Stone Mountain rose to the surface by uplift. Pressure pushed the intrusive rock above the surface.
3.Weathering breaks rock into sediment.
4.Erosion – transportation/movement of sediment.
5.Deposition, the settling of sediment.
6.Compaction, the squishing of sediment.
7.Cementation, the gluing together of sediment which becomes solid rock
8.Sedimentary rock
a. Organic – coal, fossiliferous limestone
b. Clastic - conglomerate
c. Chemical – limestone
9.Sedimentary rock gets pushed deeper into the earth, where heat and pressure changes it into metamorphic rock.
a. Foliated = slate, gneiss, schist,
b. Non-foliated = marble, quartzite
c. Melts into magma as it goes deep inside the earth.
d. Volcanic activity and return as lava, cooling into extrusive igneous rock.
