Welcome back from spring break.  We have a test tomorrow in class and study guide was given today and here are the answers to the questions.  You must study at home.

2. separation of powers and checks and balances - each branch of government was given power to control. creates a limited government and ensures no one branch becomes too powerful. page 509

3. you must register to vote at age 17 and a half.  all citizens of Georgia residing in Georgia must vote.

5. elected by popular vote to two-year terms, No limit on the number of terms, 25 years old, citizen for at least 2 years, legal residents of the district for which they were elected for at least 1 year.

Member of the house must be at least 21 years, citizen for at least 2 years and legal residents of the district for at least 1 year.

6. check page 540 fig 67 A proposal is written, it is rejected or accepted and if rejected it is rewritten and must past two - third of the vote or sits on the presidents table for 10 days and it becomes a law.

7. Governor - elected by majority vote, serve four terms or two consecutive terms, 30 years old, citizen for 15 years and resident for 6 years.

Lieutenant - elected by popular vote & same qualifications like the governor.

9. civil law - (disputes between two or more persons or groups)

criminal law - (cases involving violations of the law)

10. delinquent act - an act that would be considered a crime if committed by an adult. (juvenile is taken into custody rather than under arrest.)

unruly behavior : refuses to attend school, disobeys parents, runaway from school.

11. read page 548 (1st step is intake by an intake office) release to the custody of parents or detained.

This week we have been discussing the government of the Empire state (Georgia).  I will be attaching some notes for you to study for the quiz tomorrow.

Chapter 15

Executive is the largest branch of government and the governor is the chief executive officer.

Requirements:  must be 30 years old and a US citizen for 15 years and a resident in the state for 6 years.  he runs for 4 years (2 consecutive terms) and he can re-run after 4 years.

formal & informal powers read pg 532-533

if the governor dies he will be successed by the Lt. governor, then the speaker of the house if both of them dies.

Legislative Branch this is made up of the Georgia general Assembly: Senate 56 people and house of representative 108 people.

Requirement for serving in the Senate: Must be 25 years, US & GA citizen for 2 years and reside in the district for one year.

Requirement for serving in the house of representative: Must be 21 years, US & GA citizen for 2 years and must reside in the district for one year.

Judical branch - supreme court has 7 justices court of appeals 12 judges and 4 divisions and the superior court has 188 judges and 49 circuits.

State court  70 courts and 105 judges

Juvenile court 159 courts, 120 judges and 1 associate.

probate court, 159 courts and 159 judges.

magistrate court, 159 courts, 159 chief magistrate and 346 magistrate.

CTQ: What is the required age to serve as a supreme court judge?

Notes from today's class:  Judicial Branch  Chapter 14 section 4

- made up of supreme court & all lower courts

- Chief & 8 justices

-Supreme court is the highest court

- no qualifications

- serve for life or retirement

- president appointees w/congressional confirmation.

Jurisdiction: Foreign affairs, state disputes, federal issues and appellate jurisdiction.

- greatest power is JUDICIAL REVIEW meaning the ability to set aside the actions of the legislative or executive branches of any government agency.

Lower Courts

- circuit court

-district court: civil : criminal

- court of Appeals (no juries)

- bankruptcy court

- tax court

- court of federal claims

the chief justice of the supreme court presides over impeachment proceedings against a president.

CTQ: Why do we need to learn about the Branches of government?

Standard: Students will analyze role of legislative, executive & Judical branches of government.

Chapter 4 Notes:

Legislative: Georgia has 13 congressional Districts.

Congress is made up of (2 houses) bicameral (Senate & House of Representatives) page 512

Senate has 100 members 2 senators from each state they serve 6 year terms.

must be 30 years old

U.S Citizen for at least nine years

17th Amend. - staggered senate election (1/3)

House of Representatives:

Must be 25 years old

U.S. citizen for 7 years

State Resident

Representation based on state population.

What can congress do? - definition on page 511

Executive:

Electoral College

Electors given are equal to senate (2) and house of representatives total 538 (100 senate & 435 house of Rep. and 3 district of Columbia)

residence in U.S. for at least 14 years

22nd Amend. - limited 2 terms of office.

Welcome back and happy St. Patrick's Day.  I hope you all are relaxed and reading everyday.

Well our new standard is: Students will describe the impact of events leading to the ratification of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of rights.

CTQ: What were the Articles of Confederation? When was the Constitution written?

Students should read Unit 6 Chapter 14 section 1 page 497.  Please discuss the sign of the time with your parents and friends at home.

Causes: Nationalism, belief that allegiance to one's country comes before any other loyalty.

Military build up, increase in Military forces (weapons)

Imperialism and rise of European Empires

Alliance formation.

World War 1 Facts;

called: the war to end all wars.

Conflict occurred mainly in Europe July 28, 1914 - November 11,1918.

Most battles took place in Europe, Africa, Middle East (China: Pacific Islands)

Allied powers: France, England, Russia, Italy and United States

Central Powers: Germany Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire.

After several years of neutrality, the United States entered World War 1 on the side of the Allied Powers. Georgia's military installations expanded during the war, which ended in1918.
