All classes -

  1. Today we checked workbook pages 75, 76, 77, and 78; Exercises 1 and 2 on each page.
  2. Tomorrow we will the Participle Quiz.
  3. Week 2 Vocabulary Test will be on Monday, March 3.

1st, 5th and 6th period -

  1. Have your copy of No Fear Shakespeare "Midsummer Night's Dream" by Monday, March 3rd.
  2. Have your Shakespeare Tavern permission form and money turned in by March 14th.

January 31, 2008

ALL CLASSES:  Vocabulary packet -week 1- is due tomorrow.  Students will receive it back by the end of class so that they can study for next Tuesdays vocabulary test.  Also, students have an extra credit opportunity by participating in the "Honoring Our Heros" essay contest.  Essays are due to my by Feb. 14.

1st, 5th, and 6th period:

-Today we took the Ten Little Indians Chapter 2 Quiz and read Chapter 3.

2nd period: 

-Students began and are to finish for homework the "Character Trait Chart" for the characters in That Was Then, This Is Now.

7th period:

-Today we read Chapter 7 in the novel That Was Then, This Is Now.  Chapter 6/7 Quiz tomorrow.

January 23, 2008

Whew!  Now that the Writing Assessment is over, we are going to take a break and do a novel study.

2nd and 7th - We have begun reading "That was Then, This Is Now" by S.E. Hinton.  We are reading Twttinthe novel in class.  Students will have comprehension quizzes over the chapters and participate in activities pertaining to the novel. 

Attwn 1st, 5th, and 6th - We are currently working on the Junior Great Book short story, "Summer of the Beautiful White Horse."  Through shared inquiry students are analyzing Literature to interpret the meaning and purpose of the piece.  Our upcoming novel study will be on Agatha Chrisite's "And Then There Were None" also called "Ten Little Indians."  FYI: We will be reading Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in April and I have in the works a field trip for May 6th to The Shakespeare Tavern to see the play.  More information will come home later.

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Break and a very Happy New Year!

January 8-15 - "An Essay A Day Will Give You An A"  - As a review for the upcoming Georgia Writing Assessment, students will be responding to persuasive and expositiory writing prompts.  Students have been given a packet which contains a list of writing prompts and a timeline.  As students are working on their essays in class, I will be conferencing with each student individually about the mock writing assessment that was taken on the Friday before the break.  The State Writing Assessment will be taken on Wednesday, January 16th.  Students should come prepared with a non-mechanical pencil and two blue/black ball point pens.  A list of Writing Assessment Reminders will be given out in class on Friday.

Classwork/Homework

Today, as a warmup, we complete Exercise 1 on pages 167 and 193 in the Writing and Grammar workbook.  The workbook pages that we will be doing over the next two weeks will culiminate in a test.  Date TBA.

In class, we read a sample problem/solution essay.  Yesterday and last night students were to complete the prewriting activity.  Today in class and tonight for homework, students should have at least 2 - 3 paragraphs completed.  We will finish the draft tomorrow in class.  Students will be typing their final drafts over the weekend and it will be due on Monday, December 3.  No later!  As we will begin our next expository essay :  Compare/Contrast

Classwork/Homework

Today we began DGP #9:  when ansleys brother beck was little his favorite movie was the jungle book

Identify the parts of speech and correct errors in capitilization and punctuation.

Today, we discussed our first type of expository essay:  Problem/Solution.  Students are to brainstorm problems they face at school, i.e. sharing lockers, time at lunch, no recess, etc.

Tomorrow students will prewrite and begin drafting their essay.  Final drafts are due on Friday.

Classwork/Homework

Study for tomorrow's DGP #8 Quiz and Who/Whom Test.  Tomorrow, we will explore a "Story With Holes" as well as begin reading Roald Dahl's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More

We are now finished with our study of persuasive writing.  Next week and until the holiday break in December, we will be exploring expository writing.  FYI:  The 8th grade writing assessment will be the third week in January.

I am available for CRCT tutoring and/or writing help every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:15 in room 8C3.

Please take the time to check out the CRCT online assessment tutorial.  The web address, username, and password was sent home with report cards a few weeks back.  It is a great way to start preparing for the CRCT which will be in April.  Don't procrastinate!!!

Classwork/Homework

We continued presenting their persuasive Wonka letters.  We will be finished with presentations tomorrow.  Make sure you have complete workbook pages 141 and 142 on the Cases of Who and Whom.  We discussed the rules of use in class today so revisit and make any changes that are necessary. 

Today we began DGP #8 :  adele's cousin took a rafting trip on the colorado river     1 - Identify Parts of Speech and 2 - Correct Capitilization and Punctuation Errors.   Quiz on Friday.

Classwork/Homework

1st and 2nd period - Today we finished the Willy Wonka Persuasive Letters.  Students were to complete the workbook pages in their Writing and Grammar workbooks on "Cases of Who and Whom."  See table of contents for the two workbook pages to complete.

5th, 6th, and 7th period -  Today students read "The Trouble with Television" and MLK's "Dream" speech in the Literature textbook (pages 666-673).  Students were then to answer questions 1-10 on page 674 and turn them in by the end of class.  For homework students were to complete the workbook pages in their Writing and Grammar workbooks on "Cases of Who and Whom."  See table of contents for the two workbook pages to complete.  Students that did not have their workbooks were provided with copies of the pages from the workbook.

Tomorrow, we will finish presenting the Wonka persuasive essays in 5th, 6th, and 7th periods.

TUTORING

I will be holding tutoring sessions for students on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:15 am in my room 8C3.  Tutoring forms were sent home to select students, however anyone that needs help or wants extra practice for the CRCT please feel free to join us.  Hope to see you there!
