As a young man, De Soto helped defeat one of world’s most powerful empires – The Inca of Peru. De Soto’s later expedition through GA and the Southeastern United States (1540-1546) was considered a failure because he did not find gold nor riches. His explorations led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Native Americans mainly due to disease, but he and his men did establish important connections with Natives that resulted in new foods, customs, and languages being shared and relationships being formed that would be important to explorers coming back to this region years later.
CRCT TAKEAWAY:
- Expedition in GA a failure b/c no gold found
- Expedition exposed Natives in GA to new diseases and caused great loss of life
