In preparation for the CRCT, students will be assigned homework from the Writing and Grammar workbook. This week's assignments were as follows:
Monday: p. 50 Ex. 1
Tuesday: p. 51 Ex. 1; p. 52 Ex. 1
Wed: p. 69 Ex. 1
Thurs: p. 70 Ex. 1
In the event that your child did not complete their homework as it is not yet an established routine in our class, I am more than happy to accept a late assignment for a partial grade.
Today we read sample papers from the DOE website, and students really enjoyed hearing other students' work. The sample papers were from last year's prompt which dealt with school transportation.
The sample papers provide concrete examples to the students of how best to write their paper, and what pitfalls to avoid.
Today we began reading the essays from the mock writing test. Students had a copy of the rubric that is used to score the actual writing assessment. I read the students' papers (anonymously), and we discussed what score that paper might have received had it been for the actual writing test.
The students really enjoyed hearing other students' writing, and their comments and constructive criticism showed a high level of engagement. Tomorrow we will read some actual essays from last year's writing test.
I hope 2009 has started off well for you and your families! We are continuing to practice for the writing test, which is next Wednesday, January 21st.
Our main focus has been writing great introductions, and creating sentences that contain vivid and vivacious verbs!
